Caleri's Dialogue
StoryStory
First Interaction
Another newcomer, eh? Hmphf.
Perhaps you think this building looks friendly and inviting. Maybe you thought you could even borrow a book or two.
INCORRECT. A Palian Librarian's job is not to just loan books out willy-nilly.
No, she must also guard the knowledge within those sacred tomes.
I don't know how they did things where you come from, but we Palians believe knowledge, in the wrong hands, can be disastrous.
You may peruse the books marked for public use, but you won't see a drop of extra knowledge until I have properly vetted you!
Now, off you go. I am far too busy to keep coddling you.
- Think you’re ready to unlock the secrets hidden in these tomes? Think again!
- Shhh! Be quiet. This is a library, not a dance party!
- It pleases me to see your thirst for knowledge is so difficult to quench.
- Oh, it’s you.
- Very few people come to this library to chat... which is how I prefer it.
- Is there something you need?
- Back again, are we?
- If you’re interested in picture books, they are over in the back.
- I remember you like history books. I just got a new volume in on the Umbraan war I think you’ll find intriguing.
- I remember you like how-to books. I just got some new instruction manuals on juggling I think might tickle your fancy.
- Hello there.
- Back again, are we?
- Our newest set of books are on that shelf.
- Please wait while I bookmark this page... Ahem. Yes?
Friendship Level 1-2
- Only the ignorant stop learning.
- If you have a complaint, take it elsewhere.
- Knowledge is for those who seek it.
- Did you... need something?
- We received some new tomes you might like.
- Shh! Be quiet.
- Oh goodie. Another interruption.
Friendship Level 3-4
- Forbidden knowledge can corrupt the mind.
- Hitting the stacks again?
- I see you’ve brushed up on etiquette.
- Seek wisdom in the tomes.
- Always nice to see a fellow scholar.
- The books here have stood the test of time.
- Greetings.
- Ah, back again, are we?
- Your company is always welcome.
- We’ve received some new tomes you might like.
- I wish the others were as studious as you.
- Hardly anyone visits, these days.
- Good to see you.
Friendship Level 1-2
- Now! Back to my books.
- Remember, I’m always watching.
- At least try to be more respectful of MY time.
- Stay out of the forbidden section.
- If you want to keep chatting, try the tavern.
- If I see so much as a single dog ear, you'll regret it.
- Feel free to return, once you've learned respect.
- Next time, you should pick up a book on etiquette.
Friendship Level 3-4
- Do stop by again soon.
- I’ll let you know if we get any new books in.
- Fare thee well, fellow knowledge seeker.
- Thank you for respecting my time.
- I'm sure I'll see you again.
- Don't ever be afraid to admit your own ignorance.
- Feel free to return if you'd like to chat again.
- Remember to return all materials on time.
- I would appreciate if this all stays between us.
- Remember, keep your voice at a whisper.
- Do return soon.

DailyDaily chats
Hardly anyone ever visits the library these days. I have to admit, I prefer it that way.
Shhh! This is a library. If you want to chat go to the Inn.
If you’re looking for my advice on what to read, I would recommend starting with “A” and working your way down.
You won’t find a single uncompelling volume in this library.
If you think you can get away with something sneaky here, think again!
I'll have you know I am a fully sanctioned scholar, who has devoted her life to the library arts.
If you try to so much as return a book to the incorrect shelf, I'll know!
Don't forget I'm watching you. If a book goes missing, I'll know who to blame.
If you have nothing to do but bother me, might I suggest you pick up a book and start reading?
I apologize if you don't like the picture on your library card.
But sadly, I must insist there are no retakes.
Hmmm...I'm surprised to see you in the library. I'd suspected you would off galavanting on adventures or having a laugh at the Inn.
You never struck me as the studious type.
If you see a moth, please be a dear and destroy it at once. Those things eat books after all!
Back to get some studying in? You work so hard, a lazier person might say TOO hard.
Luckily, neither or us are lazy, are we?
If you are looking for new releases, try going elsewhere.
This library is dedicated to the works that have stood the test of time.
A fully sanctioned scholar such as myself normally wouldn't take students, but I decided to make an exception for Eshe's daughter.
If you’ve come for cookbooks, they’re to your left.
History books are to your right.
Books on magic were destroyed eons ago, so don’t you even try to find them.
I would die to protect these books.
I recommend against testing that theory.
Before retiring for the day, I always make sure to tidy the library.
That entails dusting the tables and shelves, sweeping the floors, and ensuring each book is in its proper place.
Jina and Hekla assist me with my cleaning from time to time. I couldn’t get Kenyatta to lend a hand even if I begged.
Jina’s father is one of the region’s most renowned scholars. I can tell she’s working hard to follow in his footsteps.
I've recently been bombarded with requests to create a new section in the library dedicated to self-published works.
After doing some digging, I discovered that all of them were sent in by the blacksmith! How curious.
Kenyatta has been running late for her tutelage as of late. I may have to report her to her mother.
I've heard aquariums are becoming increasingly popular home decor items.
A small one would make a pleasant addition to the library. If only I had the time to properly maintain it.
There are beautiful stories written in the sky if you know how to look for them.
If not, you should check out some of the books I have on constellations.
There’s a bad feeling on the wind since your people arrived in the Valley.
I do not blame you for it, but I do wonder, what other things lie beneath the earth waiting to awaken?
If you notice a resemblance between myself and the aspiring museum curator, it is because we are sisters.
The rumors Reth started about us secretly being the same person are nonsense.
My sister insists we host an outdoor fair together. One side dedicated to books, and the other to the cabinet of curiosities she’s amassed over the years.
Please tell me you said yes.
Of course not! The process one must go through to hold an event is far too demanding, even for me.
Sounds like fun!
Fun?! The process one must go through to hold an event is far too demanding, even for me.
Not only do we have to find and reserve a venue, but we must market the event to others. That means creating and distributing flyers.
Then there’s the associated paperwork and fees... my head hurts just thinking about it!
Unlike my sister, I am neither curious about Grimalkins or reverent of Humans.
However... I do think we Majiri are wise to keep magic out of the hands of those who might wield it incorrectly.
Personally, I do not think it is unwise to have a healthy wariness towards those with a more lackadaisical attitude towards granting vast power to every man, woman, or child who desire it.
I spoke with the carpenter this morning, and she told me she was helping you furnish your home.
If there’s anyone who can teach you the ins and outs of carpentry, it’s her. She’s an expert in her craft after all.
If you wish to become closer to the elusive alchemist, bring her that which she desires most.
Ingredients she can mold into objects of power.
If you do run into my sister, could you make sure she's taking her dragon beard tea?
It's supposed to help stabilize her moods.
I’ve heard you’ve built yourself a house. I can imagine it is quite an upgrade from your previous accommodations.
I would stop by to visit, but I can’t leave my post. Surely you understand why.
Did you know I used to be the head of the Grand Council's library?
I was, back when I lived in the Capital. Those were the days!
Badruu stopped by to return books for his wife and invited me to join everyone at the Inn for drinks.
What did you say?
I explained why I couldn't leave my post, so he promised he would "bring the party here next time".
...I sincerely hope he doesn't.
Every time Auni comes in, he tells me how skilled of a bug catcher you've become under his tutelage.
If my sister hears of this, she'll undoubtedly seek an apprenticeship under him.
Frankly, I'm concerned about what havoc those two would wreak together.
The act of sharing knowledge is sacred.
It's for that reason the doors to the library are always open, no matter what time of day.
However, I must admit that I sleep with one eye open, fearful something terrible will become of the books while they're unguarded.
Ah yes, the incense burner. I have a similar one at home sent to me by an Umbraan scholar friend. I like to use it when I curl up by the fire with a good book.
This library is the heart of wisdom in Kilima Valley.
However, you will find other sources of knowledge in the area if you look hard enough. Some may be hidden in plain sight.
The delivery boy occasionally stops by on his paper route. His nose is usually buried in books about adventure, heroism, and the paranormal.
Once in a while, he picks up unrelated titles about inventions and machinery... perhaps for that young girl by the bay.
The pair of glasses I'm wearing right now has lasted me nearly a decade. In that amount of time, my sister has gone through at least thirty pairs!
Fortunately, we have a reliable optometrist in Bahari City who supplies us with replacements at a low cost.
They're premium quality frames and quite fashionable if you ask me. Not like that gaudy name-brand garbage!
I've heard the view of the stars from the mountains of Bahari is exceptional.
If that's too far of a walk for you, I suggest venturing out to the docks west of the village. There, the heavens and the deep become one.
If you have the chance, I suggest visiting the shrine at the northeastern outskirts of the village.
Our sage works hard to maintain the site for prayer and reflection.
He occasionally leads wellness exercises there as well, though he has been too busy lately to do so.
From the moment I was born, I was raised with the expectation of becoming a proper Majiri.
My parents even went so far as the arrange lessons on etiquette, manners and values, to name a few. Now it's my duty to impart that knowledge to others.
High(er) Furniture Making Level
I overheard Tish singing your praises the other day. Apparently, you are quite the talented carpenter.
If the library finds itself in need of new furnishings, I might just reach out to you.
Caleri asks The Player QuestionsDaily chats
Tell me. Can you read old Human language?
No.
Oh, that really is a pity. I have some old books that need translating.
I can try.
If you're not sure, then the answer is "no."
Don't ever be afraid to admit your own ignorance. For that is the only truly ignorant thing we can do.
I’m sure I can. How hard can it be?
How hard can it be? I’ll have you know scholars study for decades to translate even the most basic runes.
Overconfidence was the death of your species once... I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be again.
So I can better assist you, can you let me know your favorite genre of books?
History.
We have a large selection of history on that shelf over there.
My favorite is the History of Kilima Valley.
It explores the natural history of our surroundings and was written by my own father.
How Tos!
The "How To" books are all up front.
We have books on cooking, gardening, and a variety of other subject matters.
Anything with pictures...
I must admit I don't care for picture books.
Why look at a picture when you can allow the beauty of words to paint one in your mind's eye?
Tell me... Do you see me as "uptight"?
You can be a little harsh sometimes.
I see... being harsh or unpleasant is far from my intention.
I appreciate your honesty. I'll be more mindful of how I carry myself from now on.
I think you're pretty cool.
Nobody's ever described me as "cool" before. I suppose there is a first for everything.
Do you really want me to answer that?
If I didn't, I wouldn't have asked.
...Forget it. It was a silly question, anyway.
If you're uptight, then so am I.
You and I are quite different in nature.
Still, I appreciate you trying to sympathize with me.
In the evening
Please don’t disturb Kenyatta. She’s here for her daily lessons, and she is so easily distracted.
In the evening/night
It’s getting late, and there’s still no sign of the dinner order I placed at the Inn.
Either they’re backed up, or the cook is too busy chatting up the customers to do his job.
Somebody’s hangry!
"Hangry"? Is that a euphemism for seething with rage? If so, then yes, I am quite hangry!
What, you jealous?
Why in the Moons would I be jealous? I'm hungry, and that's all there is to it!
I’ll poke Reth for you.
Yes, I would appreciate if you would "poke" him. In fact, give him a good, hard nudge for me.
Want me to cook something?
...
By the time my meal gets here, I will already have been driven to eat the library catalogue!
The evening hours are our busiest. After a long day, many just wish to unwind with a good book.
And a good drink?
If by drink, you mean tea, then yes. Nothing pairs better with a book than the aroma of freshly-brewed spice sprouts.
What are you reading these days?
I was rereading some... old texts, some of the first to come into my possession.
It was enlightening, to say the very least. I need time to ruminate over my findings.
I'm surprised to see you out and about so late in the evening. Is sleeping evading you as well?
You too, huh?
Yes. It's something I have been dealing with for some time.
Some nights are worse than others. Perhaps tonight will be a better one.
Lay off on all the tea.
You might as well ask me to give up reading while you're at it!
...I suppose one less cup of tea a day wouldn't hurt.
Want me to tell you a bedtime story?
...I'm not even going to bother answering that.
Counting Ormuus is supposed to help.
Considering I've tried just about everything, I doubt that will do anything for me... but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try. Thank you.
Jina, Hekla, and come into the library around this time every day, which means everyone seeking them out also flocks here.
As you can imagine, it gets quite noisy. I've given up on telling everyone to quiet down.
When twenty people use their "indoor voices", it makes no difference if they shout or whisper.
At night
I wonder what my sister is doing. I would hope she's asleep by now, but she's likely pursuing another one of her strange theories.
It's almost time for me to retire for the evening, and I suspect the same could be true for you.
Elouisa asked me why I seldom sleep at home. She didn't understand when I told her I needed my own space.
You should spend more time with her.
It's not like I don't want to. It's just... difficult.
We can't even enjoy a walk together without her running off halfway to pursue some imaginary create.
On the occasion I do stay at home, she never fails to wake me up in the middle of the night to entertain her theories.
Did you fight?
Contrary to popular belief, even I have to sleep sometimes.
And by popular belief, I mean that of a certain cook who's convinced himself I'm a statue who never leaves the front desk.
Do not entertain any of his nonsensical theories! I don't know who's worse, him or Elouisa!
In the Restricted Section
Don't be alarmed if this room looks a little different from the last time you were here.
These walls are always changing to suit their purpose it seems.
A lot of the tomes in my secret library were marked for destruction in the Council Archives, but I just couldn't bring myself to destroy them.
Not a soul knows what I keep in the restricted section of the library... except for you.
I sometimes wonder why I trusted you, of all people, with my greatest secret.
If word were to ever get out, I fear what ramifications that could have for you.
If you're going down, so am I.
How noble of you.
Still, I appreciate the sentiment. May our secrets stay guarded...
That won't happen.
Perhaps not. But the possibility is very much real, and that is what frightens me.
Still, I appreciate the sentiment. May our secrets stay guarded...
In the Elderwood
The Elderwoods was once home to a vibrant Umbraan diaspora community.
I remember visiting as a child.
There was an exchange student from Nocturne, the Umbraan capital, named Hugol whom I used to correspond with regularly.
He was once of the few intellects around these parts who could keep up with me.
After the war, he returned home. He works at the Natural History Museum there.
We still write... but it's not the same.
My sister, Elouisa, has always been...eccentric.
But it wasn't until our parents passed through the Veil until she became who she is today.
Please do not judge her for her how she processes grief.
I thought I would live the rest of my life in service to the Council Archives.
When my sister took ill, I left out of duty. But honestly...I blamed her for so long for "forcing me" off my Path.
I wish I could tell her now I don't regret a moment of it.
The weather is quite nice today. If I didn’t take my duty to guard our knowledge so seriously, I wouldn’t mind taking a brief stroll with you.
A little break won’t hurt!
It certainly will hurt when we return to find our library ransacked!
The pain would be worse than jumping into a boiling vat!
There will be no breaks, little or not!
I guess I’ll walk alone then...
That's not what I--
Ahem! You're welcome to stroll around the library instead.
You won't be alone, and I won't have to leave my post. That's a good enough compromise, isn't it?
Nobody’s going to steal your books.
For all we know, a thief could be lurking in the shadows right now, waiting for the right moment to plunder the library of its priceless tomes!
If something that terrible were to happen on my watch, I would never be able to forgive myself! I would banish myself from Kilima Village and never even think of returning!!!
...Ahem. As I said, I won't be leaving my post anytime soon.
Leisurely strolls can wait. My duties cannot.
So our friendship means nothing to you?
Don’t put words in my mouth. I said nothing of the sort, and you know it!
Sometimes I find it difficult to tell when you’re pulling my leg, and when you’re being serious.
Growing up, it was not uncommon for people to compare me and Elouisa.
The elders in our family were the greatest culprits, sometimes going so far as to pit us against one another.
That was one of the main reasons we decided to distance ourselves from them.
How has that worked out for you?
Good, I think, though I am saddled with some regrets.
I’m just relieved Elouisa and I were able to develop identities separate from each other.
I hope things are better now.
They are, for the most part.
I'm just relieved Elouisa and I were able to develop identities separate from each other.
You won’t believe it, Player. I had the most bizarre dream last night!
Tell me about it!
Fine, but you must promise not to tell a soul!
I was making my rounds, when suddenly the books took flight and began attacking me!
I ran around like a headless peki, trying to get away, when the shelves grew feet and began to chase me too!!!
Did it involve bloodthirsty tomes?
Wh-- How did you know?!
I could hardly focus all day. I kept expecting them to come after me.
Why would I dream something so absurd?!
Maybe it’s a sign.
Of what, the end of times?! Now you're beginning to sound just like my sister!
Look! The books are coming to life!
No, no, no… It’s just as I feared!
...You tricked me, you mischievous little-
Wipe that smug grin off your face. This is no laughing matter!
You have a big imagination.
You speak as if I conjured that bizarre scenario of my own volition!
Books can't fly, and shelves don't have feet!
Absurd? More like awesome.
You and I have very different definitions of "awesome".
What’s done is done, and what’s dreamt is dreamt. Let’s not dwell on this silly little dream any longer.
Elouisa sent me a gift today.
A brooch made out of a beautiful butterfly. It’s too delicate to wear, so I think I’ll pin it on my wall.
I wish I could tell her now I don’t regret a moment of it.
I never thought I would think this about another soul, but I enjoy your company, Player.
Mostly because you're quiet and you know how to listen.
Many people have come in and out the door today, all seeming to be in a rush.
Few take their time to browse our selection, much less have a proper conversation with me... Save for you.

I'm afraid if you give her any more of them, they'll take over our entire house and demand we pay rent for living there.
After Friendship Quest A Special Play Date
The other evening I overheard Hekla calling you Jina's "playmate."
I would ask what that means, but I don't think I care to know the answer.
After Main Quest Prove Your Generosity
Word has it that you've learned the Palian virtue of generosity. Good. I see you are on the right path.
After Skill Quest Gardening 101
I heard Badruu taught you how to garden.
Farming is quite a lucrative Path, you know. That is, if you know what you're doing.
After Main Quest Find Your Shepp and not choosing Caleri
I've heard you've found yourself a Shepp. That is no simple feat by any means.
It seems you're ready for the next step in your life in Kilima Village. I wish you good luck.
After Level 2 Friendship Quest Overdue Books
I spoke to Kenyatta, Jina, and Auni about their overdue books.
Of all of them, Jina was the only one to apologize. The other two saw no issue with what they did.
Kenyatta even went so far as to tell me "lighten up". Can you believe it?!
During Level 3 Friendship Quest Knowledge Sleuth
I know you must think me paranoid to suspect the alchemist of thievery, but once you’re around as long as I’ve been, you’ll learn to spot a thief.

After Level 4 Quest When We Were Young
That journal you gave me brought back many memories. Some good, some… not so good.

During/After Quest Keyed In
I overheard Jina muttering about a strange artifact you unearthed near your home. How curious...
After Quest Floating Relic
Did you ever get your situation with rune translating handled? Never mind, don’t tell me.
I don’t actually want to know.
After Quest Pieces of the Past
I must say, I am thrilled by our discovery of the Umbraan relics.
Not only am I learning more about the Umbraan culture, but it gives Elouisa and I something to do together.
Note: possibly bugged dialogue.
My sister discovered the device you donared is actually a short of tuning fork that grows bright when around the mysterious forest infection. We had differing ideas on why the Umbraans wanted to track it though. I think they knew the infection was dangerous and used this instrument to avoid it. We will see who is correct when we hear back from the museum.
It turns out the device you found is in fact an Echo Locator.
I was correct that the Umbraans knew about the substance and considered it quite dangerous for its emotional manipulation properties.
I was, however; surprised to learn that when the Umbraans lived here the substance was considered quite rare.
It seems that...something...has caused the Echo to spread like wildfire recently.
After Quest All Quiet on the Umbraan Front
I have some old war logs to donate,
Let me look through that...
Oh, the solider seemed to either encounter the beast or lose his mind the longer he remained in the woods.
Perhaps a guilty manifestation of his own mind?
Regardless this is fascinating. I shall get it into circulation soon.
Kenyatta's Pin
Oh... You're wearing Kenyatta's pin.
Well, that explains why she's been happier these days. And why she talks so much about you.
Don't worry. She only has good things to say.
Nai'o's Pin
I see you and that farm boy are an item. That explains all of the self-help romance books he's been reading.
Reth's Pin
That pin... You and the cook are seeing one another?
That explains the books he's been checking out lately.
What books?
"Romance for Dummies", "Homemade Meals to Sweep Them Off Their Feet", titles like that.
...Oh. Was that supposed to be a secret?
Tamala's Pin
Are my eyes deceiving me, or is that the alchemist's pin?
Your choice in partner is... interesting, to say the very least. I wouldn’t let my guard down around her if I were you. She has a reputation for breaking hearts and showing little remorse for it.
Thanks for the heads up.
It’s not so much a heads up as it is a reminder. I’m sure you already knew all of this.
You don’t know her like I do.
I pity you, you're under her thumb, and you don't even realize it.
Artifact ReactionsDaily chats
After donating Ancient Drum Toy
I actually just heard back from my friend Hugol at the museum on the fascinating spinning device you found.
It's apparently a children's toy called a "yo...yo"
I felt a little silly about my fascination with it, until I discovered that Hugol actually used to be a competitive yo-yoer.
It just gave us something new to talk about.
I still don't know what the object you brought us is, but I must admit, I've been distracted watching it go up and down and up and down. Hopefully the museum will discover it's true use.
After donating Ancient Necklace
That phoenix necklace is, of course, beautiful. Thought I would avoid ascribing any mythic properties to it. On careful inspection, several of the star stones present were fake, which is rarely the case with religious artifacts. Thought perhaps they were replaced over the years.
After donating Ancient Statue
I had not believed Kitsuus were around in ancient times, but it seems this statue disagrees. I will have to share our discovery with Jina.
After donating Umbraan Dress
I loved the dress you brought so much that I actually tried my hand at sewing for the first time. What came out was...an utter disaster. But sometimes it just feels good to try something new.
After donating Umbraan Lute
Uh, Elouisa was so fascinated with the lute you found, I encouraged her to make her own. A huge mistake! It keeps attracting silverwings...which means, silverwing droppings.
After donating Umbraan Painting
I have to admit, I may have been a little hard headed. The creature in the painting does look like one of Elouisa's cryptids. Perhaps, she's not...entirely deluded.
After donating Umbraan Thing
The device you gave us seems like it's set up to process raw Flow somehow, but the methods are beyond me. Since the Umbraan scholars are forbidden from sharing knowledge about magic with Palians, perhaps I could recruit Zeki if his curiosity really gets the best of me.
After donating Wartorn Mermaid
What my sister calls a "mermaid" I call an infected rockhopper taxidermied to a fish...but I've long since stopped trying to question her so-called "logic."
After donating Wartorn Sword
That reminds me, I keep meaning to send that sword back to the Umbraan capital with the rest of the relics, but I can't seem to find it...
